CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

If you haven't heard of Paul Carter I would say he is the Bob Dylan of punk. Accoustic and punk are two types of music you wouldn't think can be blended together but it certainly works for Paul. 'Old Enough To Know Better' is his first full length album and I really liked it. The 17 tracks are full of humour and catchy tunes. The lyrics are about everyday things that could happen to all of us and things that really matter to him. He has turned the really shitty things that have happened to him into humour. Some of his songs do have a serious message though. Paul was the first artist to play on one of punk4life's gigs and he's still pumping out his humourous songs. If you were standing on a chair just about to hang yourself and a Paul Carter song started playing you'd start pissing yourself.

Well the only reason this single got on here is because I was sent it by one of my regular contributors. This is the first stuff I have heard by Millionaire and if this single is anything to go on I don't think that we'll be hearing much about them in the future. This might only by my opinion but I think their music is dull and totally forgettable. The songs lack cohesion and both 'We Don't Live There Anymore' and 'For A Maid' are just a monotonous drone from start to finish. Generally a band will choose a few of their best songs off an album to release as singles. If this is some of the best off their new album 'Paradisiac' I hate to think what the rest of the album is like. There is only one place I will be putting this single and that is straight down my waste chute.

Nim Vind definately leans more to goth than punk but that doesn't mean to say that 'Fashion Of Fear' is a bad album. This is the first stuff I have heard by this guy and it ain't at all bad. I'm not a big fan of goth music but this is a very listenable album especially the faster tracks. The twelve tracks on the album are a mixture of slow/medium to fast tracks. Most of the tracks are dominated by powerful drums and a grumbling bass, the guitar ranges from melodic to hardcore. Some of the songs have a punky feel to them but in general you only have to see some of the titles ('Saturday Night Creepers','Killer Creature Double Feature') to see this is basically a goth album. Goth isn't generally my cup of tea but this well produced album won't just be tossed away, I will play it again.

This is another release by Fiendforce Records and as with the Nim Vind album, this compilation 'This Is Horrorpunk 2' is more towards the goth end of the spectrum. There are 28 tracks on the album all by different bands, most who I had never heard of. Some of the bands on the CD are Bloodjunkies, Hellbats, Cancerslug, American Werewolves, Frankenstein , Koffin Kats, Gutter Demons and two great names Penis Flytap and Dinah Cancer And The Graverobbers. You don't have to be a genius to see that with names like that, this is more goth than punk. Some of the best songs on the CD were 'Midnight Spookshow' by Calabrese, 'Rest In Pieces' by Ripsnorter, 'Serpent Girl' by The Vladimirs and 'Destroy All Monsters' by American Werewolves' . Goths will love this CD punks won't.
