CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

I must admit I hadn't heard much by Holy Racket until I saw them at Wasted Morecambe this year. I thought they played a great set and I was looking forward to hearing this CD by them. This 6 track EP 'North Rebel Radio' is quality old school punk which always goes down well with me. All the songs are guaranteed to get you up off your arse and have you singing along with their choruses. A great live band but here they have transferred this to the studio. 'Armed To The Teeth', 'North Rebel Radio', Hiding In The City', 'Company', 'East Side Story' and 'Barrel Smoke Joke' are all excellent songs and I found it hard to pick a favourite but if pushed I would go for 'Hiding In The City'. A well produced CD and the only negative is that it isn't a full length album.

This is the first full length album by AFS (Arthritic Foot Soldiers) and it is certainly good value with 16 tracks (£6.99). Another band who have played for punk4life Promotions AFS are definitely progressing in the right way. They sing about topics that matter to them politically but they certainly aren't lacking in the humour department. 'Anorexic Princess Of Pop', 'Hammer To The Head'', 'God Squad', 'Guns For Oil', and 'Year Of The Barricades' are all good songs but the best off what is a very good, well produced album were in my opinion 'Minimum Wage' and the best track of the lot a well chosen title track 'Tales Of A Drunken Generation'. These guys have the capacity to make inroads in a punk scene that is saturated at the moment. If you haven't heard of AFS they are a band who are certainly worth checking out.

'Prepare To Be Dummified' is a powerful yet melodic album from Spitting Dummies. I have seen these guys many times live over the years and now they have matured into a quality band. This album has good lyrics and vocals with some great singalong choruses and all backed up by good music.
There are 10 tracks on the album, 'Honeypot', 'Glaxo Baby', 'Line 'Em Up', 'Feelin' Within', 'Suitcase Pimp', 'Imaginary Girl', 'Cosa Nostra', 'Gift', 'Out On The Loose' and 'Prince Of Thieves'. I thought the best of the bunch were 'Glaxo Baby','Feelin' Within', 'Suitcase Pimp' and best of all 'Cosa Nostra' but on the whole it's all good. Well produced, more melodic than aggressive and yet it still packs a punch. Thumbs up from me.

I have never been a fan of cover bands. Playing other bands songs in my opinion shows that they themselves lack the imagination to do their own material. Any band should stand on their own merit and not by ripping off other bands who have done all the work for them.
This 11 track live album aptly named 'Government Health Warning' by The Urban Terrorists is bad even by cover bands standards. The songs on the album are absolutely destroyed and bear no resemblance to the original versions. Classic songs off the album
like 'Rockaway Beach' and 'Tommy Gun' would have Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer spinning in their graves. These guys should be confined to a soundless version of Stars Your Eyes with subtitles.
