CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

I always like these compilation CDs because they give me a chance to check out some bands I haven't heard before. This CD 'Lambination' does exactly that with 18 tracks by 17 different bands. Quite a few of the bands I hadn't heard of and with a wide variety of styles on offer there is something on here for everyone. From old school through American style right through to hardcore it's all covered. I know it's hard to say if a band is really good from just one track but there are plenty of good songs on this CD and that's what matters. I thought the best bands on the CD were Semmi Komoly, Arthritic Foot Soldiers, Dogshit Sandwich, The Pints and D'Connor Bois. On the whole this isn't a bad CD and although I didn't like some of the songs there was enough good music to compensate for that.

If you haven't heard of Buzzkill before they are a ska/punk band cut from the same cloth as The Dead Pets. They have that same raw guitar sound blended with a brass section that makes it neither punk nor ska but a hybrid of both. I had heard of Buzzkill but 'Driven By Loss' is the first thing I have heard by them and this 13 track CD isn't a bad effort. They have a bit of a way to go break the the stranglehold that The Dead Pets have in this genre but this CD will certainly help. As with The Dead Pets I thought their faster tracks were much better and more energetic but the slower tracks were for me too bland.
I thought the best tracks on the CD were 'Broken Picture' the title track 'Driven By Loss', 'Heartbreak Inferno' and 'In My Head'. Not a bad CD but I wouldn't go overboard.

I have got to admit '600 Miles From...' by Hitechjet ain't my cup of tea at all. I'm not doubting the bands ability as musicians or the singers very versatile vocals but they really need to make up their minds which musical path they are going to follow. Regardless of what anyone says, people always put a band in a certain genre. If you went into a record shop looking for this CD you would have no idea which aisle to look in. The 13 tracks on the CD cover a range of different styles from stuff verging on hardcore to ballards. One thing I can say about this CD and that is it definately isn't punk. They do have an American sound but not that usual US style that makes them sound like the clones that most US bands are. They need to get a sound that makes people say 'Hey that's Hitechjet' and not 'Who the fuck is this?'.

This live CD 'Live At Wakefield 2005' by Dogsflesh isn't like your average live CD. Most live albums just have selected tracks that are overproduced and they end up losing that live feel. This CD is a whole live gig and if you turn up the volume on your CD player and close your eyes it gives you the feeling that you are there.
Dogsflesh's music emanates power and fury and has that early Discharge feel to it. The in ya face vocals by John are spat out with the venom that is needed to go with their style of music. Only just back after a long layoff the band have already recaptured their excellent live sound. If you haven't heard of Dogsflesh but are a fan of Discharge then if I were you i'd risk buying it because there is a good chance you'll like it.
