CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

Well i've been waiting for this CD by Stockport trio One Man Stand for a while and finally it's here. 'Bulletproof' is a 5 track EP with a bonus video track on Blackburn based label Noize Anoize. The 5 tracks 'You Can't Polish Shit', 'Wet Paint', 'Whats Going On', 'Done My Time' and 'Johnny Seven And Bazooka Joe' are all good songs with good lyrics and it's good to see the band haven't deviated style wise from the early DIY releases they've had. Their music is still dominated by a raw guitar sound that sounds much better than in their earlier releases, which shows production does matter. The second song 'Wet Paint' is in my opinion worth the price of the CD on it's own. The video has some good live bits in too one of which is on punk4life. Stockport needs something to make it's feet move as their football team don't seem to move theirs much. An Excellent CD and well produced.

This is the first thing i've heard by The Square Peg and this 14 track CD 'Regeneration' is a very good effort. Needs on guitar brings that Swellbellys feel to some of their songs but the vocals are very different from his with Swellbellys. I have always liked Swellbellys aggressive vocals and even though the vocals on this CD aren't aggressive Larry does a good job.
The CD is mostly played at a breakfast pace but there are some slower songs. I Thought 'Lunatics', 'The Chosen', 'City Of Shit' and 'Mental Persuasion' the faster tracks were superb but even these were bettered by 'Footstep On My Grave' which is a bit slower and has trumpet in the choruses. This really is a great CD and yet again Scotland brings us more quality music. Hopefully Needs can divide his time between both bands.

This compilation 'Conform Or Die' has 56 tracks, 2 by each of the 28 bands on this double CD. Mostly lesser known bands which is great because I always like hearing bands I haven't heard before. There are even 2 tracks by my old band 3CR, one sung by me (Cover Up) and one by Nobby (Oldham's Burning) my predecessor. Some of the other bands on the CD are Shock Nagasaki, The Threats, Valdez, The Zips, The Square Peg, Arthritic Foot Soldiers (A favourite band of mine), Picture Frame Seduction, Swellbellys, Dead In A Ditch, Shatterhand, Capo Regime, One Car Pile Up and In The Shit. That's just a slice of the bands covered on the CD and there are plenty more. With there being so much on the CD there is bound to be some stuff that you aren't keen on but with 2 hours 25 minutes of music there is plenty you will like. Good value.

'The Ugly Truth About Blackpool' Volume One is like an archive of the bands from the town through the years. A good Idea this and it will surprise you how many good bands come from the tackiest seaside resort in Britain, the resort designated to hold next years Wasted festival. There are 27 bands covered from Screwdriver's 'An-ti-so-cial' in 1977 (Before they went off at a Nazi tangent) to SICK56's 'No Accident' (Attack mix) in 2005. Some of the tracks I really liked were 'Jerusalem' by One Way System, 'Official Hooligan' by Antisocial, 'Bravado' by The Fits, 'Tatty Seaside Town' by The Membranes, 'Time To Be Alone' by The Pink Torpedoes and 'Kill Someone' by Uncle Fester.
Other towns or cities could do something similar but getting things like this done involve a lot of discussions with bands and record labels but it's worth the result. A great CD.
