CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

'Only Beer Can Save Us Now' by Lancashire based skateboard punks AFS (Arthritic Foot Soldiers) is another offering by this band who are a favourite of mine. There are 9 tracks of which 4 are live and 5 are studio versions. There is also a hidden track 'Buffalo Soldier' after the last track on the CD.
The 4 live tracks are 'Only Beer Can Save Us Now' and 'No Hope' (new songs) and 'Anorexic Princess Of Pop' and 'Anarchy In Argos' (From 'Tales Of A Drunken Generation' Album.) The live stuff is great and shows what a good live band they are. The studio tracks are 'Nobodies', 'Massacre Of The Innocent','Don't Fit', Justice For None' and for me the best track off the CD 'Architecture Of Life'. I thought this was a great CD with AFS's usual catchy songs. They are getting quite prolific with good new songs appearing regularly. Keep it up guys.

In a unique move, the trade union movement, charities, campaigns and the music industry have joined forces to release a single for this years St Patrick's Day. 'Everybody's Welcome To The Hooley' is an anti-racist anthem by North London ceilidh rockers Neck. It's a reminder to Irish people both here and back home that they've been the victims of racism down the years.
If you like a bit of Irish music (and me being of Irish decent I do) then this is for you. It has that traditional Irish feel to it and is guaranteed to get people on their feet for St Patrick's day. The other 2 songs on the single 'The Night (That) The Shamrock Was Drowned' has a definite Pogues feel to it and 'The Star Of County Hollaway/Shite 'N' Onions' is again traditionally Irish music. Not a bad effort at all.

'Arab On The Hill' is a 14 track album by The Pain which is well worth checking out. I saw these guys who are from Newtown in Wales live recently and I thought they were a good tight unit.
I really liked this album and there is plenty on the album to like. My favourite track off the album was 'Beer For The Boys' which starts off as a parody of the Dads Army theme tune and continues into a catchy singalong chorus. The title track is also a good song and other tracks I favoured were 'Back To You Return', 'I Fell In Love With A Suicide Bomber', 'Blessed Are The Children' and 'Massacre'. There is also a cover of 'Something In The Air' but with my loathing of cover versions, enough said. With aggressive vocals, powerful drums and excellent guitar I think these guys will soon be creating waves that reach a lot further than their native Wales.

'Anti-Society' (Anarcho-punk compilation vol. 3) is a various artists compilation release from Overground Records. There are 23 tracks on the album and most of the artists on the album i'd not heard of, but as you all know i'm always up for hearing new bands. If more people would take the trouble to listen to the lesser known bands then gigs would be better attended and the scene would be healthier.
This really is a good album and proves just how good some of the lesser known bands are. Some of the artists on the album are Reality Control, Icons Of Filth, The Sears, A.O.A., Liberty, Karma Sutra, Exit-Stance, Alternative, Reality, Thatcher On Acid, Revulsion, Untermensch, Hagar The Womb, Stalag 17, Oi Poloi, M.U.S.E. and The Mental. The best compilation CD i've heard for a while this and the real punks out there will love it.
