CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

When I got this CD by The Scabs I couldn't help but laugh at the title 'Pick Em & Bleed!', they couldn't have chose a better title. The CD harps back to the golden era of punk when bands sang about real issues. The CD kicks off with 'Stalker' and I was immediately gripped by the aggressive vocals but these guys can really play too. The other songs on the CD 'Control Freak', 'Sick Society', 'Nation In Sedation', 'Bully Boys' and 'Dead End Dave' tell us what a sewer the world we live in now is. These guys could give some pointers to some of the bands who "sold out" of punk ethos long ago. Of the hundreds of CDs i've reviewed this is right at the top of the pile. This is quality and if you love "Real punk" this is for you. Fuck your Upstarts and Rejects, this is the real deal.

I saw X-Rippers live for the first time recently and really enjoyed them. Their latest release 'Nononsense' has five songs recorded in the studio 'Who's The Doctor?', 'Jimmy Kelly', 'What We Want', 'Pop Idol' and 'See My Rolex' and eleven live tracks which were recorded at The Snooty Fox in Wakefield. The songs recorded in the studio are great but the eleven live songs are surprisingly good quality. These Yorkshire lads whose songs are filled with humour "Hey Gareth fancy a game of snap for a fiver" in the singalong 'Pop Idol' and a song about legendary soap serial killer 'Richard Hillman' being just a few examples that will bring a smile to your face. Both lyrically and musically sound this CD is dedicated to X-Ripper Munk who saddly passed away last year and i'm sure he'd be chuffed at how it sounds.

This is Beyond Reasonable Doubt's self titled debut album and whilst their style does lean quite a bit towards the USA it ain't actually a bad album. It's good to see young bands serving their apprenticeships on the gig circuit instead of wanting instant fame on one of the umpteen dross shows that bombard our TV sets on a regular basis. There is a definitely a future for these guys if they keep this kind of material coming and if they can get exposure in the States they could make an impact over there too. Breaking into the US scene isn't easy but it can be done as several UK bands have already proved.
A single from the album 'Blinded By A Thousand Reasons' has already had airplay on Mike Davies' The Lock Up and the album will be released on May 15th. A very creditable effort this and I think we'll be hearing more about this band in the near future.

Well it's been about 18 months since T.V. Smith's last album release and his latest release 'Misinformation Overload' is a much anticipated album. Smith is never afraid to experiment with his music style and this album is yet another fine offering by one of the best musicians to come from the time when punk was born. This 12 track album is filled with the quality lyrics that we now all expect from Smith but the music is solid too.
It's a well constructed album and I think fans of his past albums will like this one too. From the the first track 'Good Times Are Back' to the last 'Carrying On' it's all good but in 'Not In My Name' Smith has wrote an absolute gem. With the subject of I.D. cards being on the government agenda this is a 21st century protest song that speaks volumes.
