I
saw these guys live myself a while ago and they certainly
surprised me. Whilst showing a lot of enthusiasm they
are very capable musicians for ones so young. I see
a lot of the so called well known punk bands who have
been around for years and Outlaw could certainly teach
them a few things regardless of their age. A lot of
their elders just show up for a gig, put in an average
performance and take the money and run. Outlaw really
try and put on a show and it shows on this DVD. Of the
9 tracks on the DVD, 4 are covers 'Poor & Weird'
(The Briefs), 'Black Flowers' (999), 'BBC'
(Austin Powers) and 'If The Kids Are United'
(Sham 69), 5 are all their own work 'Jeremy Bentham',
'Be Yourself', 'My Mum Says', 'Rock
'N' Roll Outlaw' and 'Television Addict'.
I'm not a fan of covers even though they were played
well, but I thought the 5 songs of their own were very
good and they have plenty of time to write more. In
an age of reality TV where kids want instant fame Outlaw
are doing it where it matters and that is on stage by
racking up gigs and gaining respect from their peers.
If they stick around for a few years they will sound
even better because the singers voice hasn't broken
yet.

Another
release by Outlaw, this time a CD 'Get In The Van'.
There is a lot to like about this well packaged, well
produced 12 track CD. You can see how youthful these guys
are from the CD cover but I can assure you that these
guys are talented musicians whatever their age. There
are some covers on the CD 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up'
(Ramones) and 'If The Kids Are United' (Sham
69) to name a few, and although I loath cover versions,
I think they are included because they relate to youth.
In all honestly they are well interpreted. Some of their
own material has a slight ramones feel to it and gets
you tapping your feet. With great songs like 'My Mum
Says' and 'Junk Food' they needn't rely
on covers. A good CD.

This
various artists compilation 'The Harder, The Better:
Volume 11' is exactly as the title says. This is
mostly pure hardcore. Of the 26 bands featured on the
CD I had only heard of 2 (AFS and The Blissetts) and they
aren't what i'd call hardcore. Hardcore isn't my cup of
tea at all. Most hardcore how I see it is just a mash
of sound and screaming instead of singing. A lot of it
sounds very similar and basically it bores the shit out
of me. This CD has done nothing to change that. There
are some good songs on the CD 'Guns For Oil'
by AFS, 'Disco Go' by The Cretins and 'Destruction
Day' by The Blissetts but they in my book are punk
not hardcore. Other bands featured on the CD are Inhuman,
Draghead, Nobis, Warfare, Rictus Grin, Savannah and Lost
Soul. If you are a fan of hardcore then this CD which
only costs $6.99 might be considered a bargain.

'Plus
Ca Change Pour La Meme Chose' (whatever that means)
is a split CD with 3 tracks by Destructors 666 (The new
name for The Desructors) and 3 tracks by The Ruined.
The 3 tracks by Destructors 666 are pretty good and the
reworked version of 'Bullshit' is faster and
better in my opinion than the original version. The other
tracks by them '1969' and 'Existence'
are also pretty good and are pretty much what you would
expect from The Destructors of old.
This album was the first time i've heard anything by The
Ruined and I thought they sounded good. 'She Must
Die' and 'Zombie Takedown' are both good
songs but I thought 'City Of The Dead' was superb.
Hopefully i'll get to hear more by them.
