CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

The third installment of the 'Gnarly Dude' saga is crammed with relatively unknown bands as were the first two CDs. This time there are 26 tracks all by different bands and the music as usual is very varied. There is old school punk, hardcore, ska and some tracks that I couldn't catagorise so there is something on here for everybody. The Gnarly Dude CDs are always good value but of the 3 albums I think this is the best so far. Some of the artists I favoured were Phinius Gage, the consistantly good AFS, Crouch Mog, Vanilla Pod, Rosenfeld, Capitol Targets, Johno & The Trannies and Newtown Kings. I myself thought the best track off the CD was 'Time Time Time' by ICH. The CD is only 3 quid and you can buy the whole Gnarly Dude trilogy for a fiver so get your wallets out.

'Gas Up The Machine' is the first CD i've heard by The Blunts and it's a very good effort. There are 13 tracks on the CD and I really enjoyed my first taste of these guys. Hailing from the midlands these guys play quality tunes that get you tapping your feet through the floor. This is a CD that has the aggression of punk, good lyrics whilst also being very tuneful, the production is also excellent. Best tracks off this CD for me were 'Don't Give Up On Me Now', 'Life On Hold', and 'Are You Sitting Comfortably?' but on the whole it's quality all the way.
Only formed in 2000 I don't think it will be long before these guys make a real impact on the punk scene.
I can't believe i've never seen these guys live yet but the first chance I get I will.

A split CD this with 7 tracks each from both Viktims and This System Kills. Very aptly named 'Victims Of This System' I hadn't heard a lot by either band. Both bands have a hardcore element. This System Kills are hardcore punk and I saw them live a few years ago but they didn't really make an impression on me. These 7 tracks by them did make an impression on me this time and they are definitely heading in the right direction after earlier stuff i've heard by them. A steady improvement.
Viktims are from the west of France and that makes them the first French band to be featured on Punk4life. They are strictly hardcore and although hardcore ain't really my cup of tea these guys are one of the best i've heard. They span the barrier between punk and metal and will attract fans from both.

'Every Weekend' is the second album i've reviewed by Dun 2 Def. There have been a few changes in personel since their their self titled debut album in 2004 and this album is a distinct improvement. After quite a few years together I think Dun 2 Def are finally reaching their full potential and that is showing with good live support spots. This is classic old school punk pure and simple and this 10 track album certainly went down well with me. From the first track 'The Scars Of War' to the last 'You Certainly Have Been' it's all good and one of the best albums i've heard this year and i've heard a lot. Keep it up lads because this formula works.
If you haven't heard of Dun 2 Def don't let that put you off because if you're an old school fan you'll probably like this.
