CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

Churchill are the first Oi band to have their CD reviewed by punk4life. They are influenced by 'The Business' and '4Skins' and they have all the aggression that their predecessors have. 'Hated And Proud' is a very good 8 track CD.Their lyrics are about things that they really believe in. There doesn't seem to be as many Oi bands on the scene as a few years ago and I for one am glad 'Churchill' are one of the new bands to keep the Oi tradition alive.
The title track track 'Hated And Proud' is agressive and has that 'we don't give a fuck what you think' feel which is what Oi is all about. My favourite songs on the CD are 'Fight Back' and 'Steaming In'. If you like traditional Oi you will probably like this CD.

The Remnants are an energetic 3 piece band who are very much influenced by The Clash. There are two Clash covers on their 'Spitting Image' CD, 'The Guns Of Brixton' and 'Police And Thieves' both of which are pretty good covers. Most pretty new bands do a few covers at the start but this bands own material is good enough to stand on it's own. I don't think they need to do covers to grab peoples attention.
They have a good strong sound for a 3 piece band. Some of their songs have that bit of a reggae feel just as The Clash did. The CD starts with 'Join The Fight' which is a really good song. There are a few Ska songs too but my favourite track on the CD has got to be 'Saviour'. Of the 13 tracks on this CD 5 are live. The production could be better but it's a good CD.

'Gnarly Dude 2' is a various artists CD. There are 23 tracks on the CD in total that range from Electonic, Thrash right through to punk. Well this is a punk website so i'll tell you about the punk stuff. The bands are a mixture of both UK and US bands most of which you probably haven't heard of before. I must admit to only knowing anything about one of the bands and that is AFS whose own CD I have reviewed on here before. The bands featured on this CD that I would put in the punk catagory are MC Rad, Auberon Phoenix & The Dirt Box Fiddlers, Lostribe, K-Line, The Fraction, AFS, Leiana (With Chuck Treece) and Joe Popp. Some of these bands are very good and you probably wouldn't be able to get hold of these tracks anywhere else. Best song on the CD for me was 'Spitfire' by Joe Popp which is really good.

This is the first time I have heard anything by these Scottish guys. 'Random Acts of Defiance' really is a great album. First time I listened to this CD by 'Shatterhand' it definately had a similar sound to another band I like 'The Pits'. Scotland has spawned some of the UKs best punk bands and I think 'Shatterhand' are up there too. The CD covers a range of topics all backed up by really catchy tunes. They have a melodic quality and Stuart their singer has a gravelly voice that fits in well with their music. In a few tracks they have a US feel especially in 'Speakeasy'. For me the best tracks of the 11 on the CD are 'Caught In The Headlights' and 'Blood Money' which is fast, aggressive and yet melodic at the same time. An excellent CD.
