CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

Well I never thought i'd see Mr Bling, the man who's got more jewellery than H Samuel appear on the cover of any CD let alone lend his name to the title 'Three In A Bed With Bobby George'. This 5 track EP by young Essex band Koopa is big on American influence. Their music is termed 'Pop Punk' but in my book it's more pop than punk. Too many young bands are going for that American style these days and pretty soon the British sound will die out. Koopa's music will probably appeal to you if you are fan of The Offspring and similar bands and with two self released singles already reaching the top 75, it's a fair bet we'll be hearing more from them. Their music did however grow on me after a few plays. Best track of the 5 for me was 'How True'.

Well 'American Hardcore: The History Of American Punk Rock 1980-1986' the motion picture soundtrack has 26 tracks crammed into 37 minutes. As regulars will know i'm not a big fan of the American scene and for me punk is a British concept that Americans hijacked for their own ends. Some of the bands i've heard before, Black Flag, Bad Brains, D.O.A., Circle Jerks, and MDC being some of them but there were plenty of bands i'd never had the pleasure (or displeasure) of hearing. Middle Class, Gang Green, The Freeze, Jerry's Kids, SS Decontrol, Void, Scream and Batallion Of Saints being a selection. If you like these American style bands it's probably a good buy, but in all honestly i'd rather listen to some good old school ENGLISH punk not the stuff you think is punk because you are told it is.

Nomatrix are a trio from the Emerald isle and 'Ugly' is is their excellent new 16 track album. Their influences are many but it all gels together to give them their own sound. Their music is varied and this should result in their fan base being spread throughout punk, hardcore and a few other genres. Ranging from slow, through medium and on to fast as fuck, it's all there. I haven't heard much from across the Irish sea recently but I was certainly impressed with the quality of the songs and the production is also very good. I generally favoured their faster songs 'A Reflection Of Popular Minority', 'Want To Be', 'Having To Realise', 'School (Bridge To The Future) Race' and 'Time Kills All' being amongst my favourites but one of their slower songs 'Unsure' was what I thought was the best of a very good bunch.

I saw Greenland Whalefishers live a few years ago and every person in the place was up dancing, including me. They also played well enough to make me part with my hard earned money for a CD of theirs, so I was quite pleased when their latest offering 'Down And Out' popped through my letterbox. With my Irish roots and my grandad always playing ditties from the Emerald Isle how could I not be a fan. Irish music is a genre all of it's own and love it or hate it there is always plenty of good musicianship shown in it. If you are a fan of The Pogues/Shane MacGowan or Blood Or Whiskey this will be up your street. It's traditional as it comes and with good production that comes with any release by Deadlamb Records, it's as good as anything released by better known Irish Bands.
