CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

I'd never heard of Cancer Bats before I received 'Birthing The Giant' their new 11 track album. Hailing from the same place as Alexisonfire (Toronto,Canada) whose latest album i've also reviewed, the hardcore scene seems to be pretty bouyant in Canada. This album is filled with fury and as hardcore goes, you won't find anything harder. With influences from Refused, Black Flag, Led Zeppelin and Down amongst others, it all gels together into a boiling explosion of rage and aggression. I've never really been a fan of hardcore but with albums like this i'm gradually being won around. This is a very good album and if you are into hardcore then you won't go far wrong.
The band are actually playing dates in the UK as this review is written (12-16th Dec) and they are definitely worth checking out.

'Lambination 2' is the second installment in the Lambination series (Lambination 1 released last year Click Here for review) and is a great mix of different styles from all around the globe. Deadlamb Records are a big supporter of lesser known bands and that will always get my vote every time. There are 21 tracks that are mostly punk but there is the odd metal, ska, Oi and Irish track thrown in for good measure. The foreign bands featured on the album are Lucien (Sweden), Greenland Whalefishers (Norway), California Redemption (USA), Semmi Komoly (Hungary), 2nd Class Citizens (USA), Glamorous Maggots (Canada), Juicehead (USA), Ab Irato (Canada), Hate is Just A Feeling (Sweden) and Lone (Germany). I thought this was even better than Lambination 1 and it's very reasonably priced so all you real punks get your hands in your pockets.

This 5 track E.P. 'Enjoy' is the first material i've heard by Skatch who are from Birmingham. These guys have a unique style which is a mix of American style punk and ska. I like bands who aren't afraid to try something that is different and this could work in Skatch's favour with them attracting fans from both ska and lovers of American style punk. The trombone just adds another dimension to their music and I thought these 5 tracks were as good as some of the material by recognised bands like Good Charlotte and Less Than Jake. Saddly recognition seems to be everything in the music business but if these guys are promoted right they could have a big future. Well produced this really is a great E.P. The track listing is 'Sunshine State Of Mind', 'Dreaming', 'Commit This To Memory', 'Party, My House?', 'Time Destroys All Things'.

'Red Light District' is the new 14 track album by Swedish punks Sniffing Glue. I had only heard a few tracks by these guys before but this album is quality old school punk at it's best and I thought it was excellent. Sometimes the guitar is a bit flambouyant but that's only my opinion. Raw and aggressive it's one of the best old school albums i've heard this year. With plenty of singalong choruses that always go down well live, it's sure to create waves further than the shores of Sweden. Some of the best tracks were 'Indecent Behaviour', 'Never Forget', 'You'll Never Wank Alone', 'Rebelheart', and 'Mr Bastard' but best track of the lot was the anthemic 'Sobriety Sucks' which in my book is a classic song. All lovers of old school and Oi will love this album.
