CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

Not often I get a CD off a band from Denmark, Copenhagen to be exact. I saw these guys play live a bit ago and thought they were pretty good. They have a sound that is quite like their fellow Scandinavians Blisterhead, American style pop punk and a bit Ramonesque in some songs. Their singer sounds as American as mama's apple pie and their music is as American as anything you'll hear from bands like Green Day and the like. Of the thirteen songs on the CD the majority are very fast paced and very catchy but the slower songs just didn't do it for me at all. It wouldn't surprise me if these guys made a name for themselves in America because they are already signed to New York based Whoa Oh Records and I think their music will be devoured by fans of the American punk scene.

The Bullet Kings who are from Bolton are made up of three members from the band Churchill. Their sound is different to Churchill's and in my opinion their songs are more diverse and they will appeal to a wider fan base. Of these two EP releases 'Porno Pig' (4 Tracks) and 'Crash Mad' (3 Tracks) I preferred the first which has 3 great tracks in 'Riot', 'Words' and 'Private Death'. The final track 'Violence In The City' wasn't quite as good but all the songs have good singalong choruses. The songs off 'Crash Mad' the second Ep 'Porno Pig', 'Alcohol And Speed' and 'Meltdown' aren't as catchy as the ones off 'Porno Pig' but still pretty good. Wilf's gravelly vocals, excellent drumming, bass and good guitar all add up to something better than Churchill. Hopefully there will be an album release soon.

Well I certainly enjoyed Hotwired's CD 'Make It Count'. I like my Punk rough 'n' ready and that's what this CD is. It kicks off with 'Domestos & Drugs' which has the sound of '77 punk written all over it. This sound penetrates through all nine tracks on the album. This is real quality punk, only my opinion but that's what I think. Not a bad track on the CD but for me 'Mr Know it all', 'Police Informer', 'Yob' and the afore mentioned 'Domestos & Drugs' are the best of the bunch. Bags of aggression and their music is kept simple but catchy. Plenty of swearing which is good too. What's up with bands these days you'd think they were playing in front of their mum and dad in the living room.
These guys really belt it out and if they can produce this sound on stage they'll be a band to look out for live.

This is the first thing i've heard by Boredom A.D. (ex Boredom) since Barnsey (UK Subs) joined as lead vocalist. Andy F still plays bass which leaves Barnsey free to concentrate soley on the vocals. Just the three tracks here 'Vincent Price', 'All About Me' and 'Lowlife 07' (A new version of an old Boredom song). The first two tracks are pretty good musically but I'll have to hear more because i'm not really convinced by Barnsey's vocals but then he has only been in the band a while. I have listened to both versions of 'Lowlife' and still favour the old version. I always liked Boredom so the change of vocals might take a while to get used to. I'll check the new line-up out live soon. Hopefully Barnsey's other gigs with the Subs will still leave him some time to play some gigs with Boredom A.D.
