CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

'Seek Out Your Foes And Make Them Sorry' by Phinius Gage who hail from Brighton have a definite slant towards American style. I don't give a shit what style music is played in as long as it's good and this certainly is. I'm gradually warming to American style punk and it's great to see bands like these from Britain challenging the American bands at their own style. This is fast and furious with the speed of hardcore but without the screaming. The songs have a melodic quality that comes through even over the supersonic paced drumming. Eleven of the twelve songs on the CD will leave you gasping for breath and I did enjoy most of the songs but one 'Provocation Song' is accoustic and out of keeping with the style of the CD. Overall a very good CD.

Chariots are another British band trying to beat their American counterparts at their own game. 'The Inner Life' is Hardcore and as you will know if you read my reviews i'm not a big fan of hardcore. I prefer singing to screaming and i'm surprised any hardcore bands tour because you would think the singers voice would be shot after a few consecutive nights screaming. It was hard to listen to this CD objectively simply because of what i've said previously but it doesn't change the fact that the production on the CD is very poor. Of the five songs on this CD four were tortoise paced and the other just medium paced. I always find hardcore more palatable played at a faster pace. I couldn't fine one positive and in all honesty I thought it was a pile of shit.

I'd never even heard of In Liars We Trust but this self titled CD is certainly a very good effort. The band are from Los Angeles but they certainly aren't like your average run of the mill American band. There is depth to their music which is dominated by excellent female lead vocals by Josi and backed up by good support vocals by Fossface. It's always nice to hear good female vocals because the punk scene is still male dominated. Their music is mainly fast paced with a strong bass line and raw guitar but the vocals really stand out. It was really hard to pick a favourite track out of the ten tracks on this CD because it's all good but if pushed i'd say 'Get It' is the best track off a musically solid, well produced CD. One of the best CDs i've heard this year.

Well The Scabs are probably my favourite band at the moment and it's good to see 'Gutterscum' their new six track EP is at least as good if not better than their last offering. These guys who probably live in the sewers themselves sing about the desperation of a world filled with shit. With songs like 'Blades Beat Fists' which tells us of the violent society we live in and 'Plastic Doll' which is about women that are addicted to cosmetic surgery, this EP makes Eastenders look like The Happy House. The four other tracks 'Gutterscum', 'On Your Own', 'Barbed Wire Baby' and 'Generation Terrorism' are also quality songs about the shitty world we live in. This is punk at it's best, with aggressive vocals, excellent lyrics and that raw edge that makes The Scabs a cut above the rest.
