CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

'Dracula Blood' is the new download single by Zombina And The Skeletones. This is the first material i've heard by them and 2 tracks (Both different versions of the same song) is not really much to form an opinion. Whilst the album version of the song song is ok but baddly produced, I thought the second version (Doc 'N' Dervish Brain Psychosis Mix) sounded even worse production wise and it sounded like it was just something to give away on a download. Does anybody ever buy downloads? On the band I think they are of the same ilk as bands like the B52s and they never achieved much of note. No matter what anybody thinks we all pigeon-hole bands into a genre and i'm not sure what genre Zombina and her gang are trying to appeal to. Maybe give Christopher Lee a copy.

Another in a long line of artists whose name had never registered in my Brain until a CD dropped through my letterbox. 'Aeon Spoke' (Los Angeles) the self titled album isn't exactly what i'm used to reviewing on here, but it was actually a very listenable CD. Not at all punk but a collection of 10 very good acoustic/melodic songs. The nearest thing I can compare some of his songs to is early Coldplay, which ain't a bad thing. 'Yellowman' and 'Cavalry Of Woe' were the couple of tracks in my opinion that were the best off the album, but in essence this is a fine CD. Diverse, well produced and it managed to grab my attention.

Humpin Mojo is the new 5 track EP by Kingskin, yet another band who don't appear to have much in common with the punk scene. If anything they are a blend of grunge and classic rock. They say they are inspired by Nirvana and Alice in chains which should give you an idea of the route they might be going. Being honest these 5 tracks weren't really my cup of tea but after listening to the CD several times it began to grow on me. It was obvious these guys are talented musicians and they are home grown too. Best track of the 5 for me was the excellent 'Fat Mamma Got Soul' These guys who are from South-East England also enjoy a good laugh which was demonstrated at the Contemporary Music graduation Ball where the vocalist Chris did the whole gig bollock naked. Class.

Vatican DC who hail from London are a band who I found it really hard to stamp a genre on. In some songs they do have a sound similar to The Buzzcocks or The Hives but in others they have a completely different sound which is more melodic. I thought the vocals were a bit high pitched in places but that never did Pete Shelley any harm and there were some very catchy tunes on 'Make It Ride' their new 10 track album. Obviously swayed to the more punky offerings by them I thought 'Sparks' and 'She Takes Me Out' were the best off what was a pretty good album. I can see these guys getting regular airplay in the future which can only increase their popularity even further. They have also released a download single 'Fountainhead' which is off the album.
