CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

Some bands are great live but they just can't reproduce it in the studio. That certainly isn't the case with Las Vegas punks The Objex. 'Attack Of The Objex' is definitely amongst the best albums i've reviewed in the 3 years Punk4life has been around. Their singer Felony Melanie is touted as the Tina Turner of punk rock and that isn't far off the mark. Their brand of pop punk has been compared to The Briefs but if they can keep up this standard they will overtake The Briefs in popularity.
This 10 track album kicks off with the superb 'Fun In Funeral' and the quality just keeps coming. 'The Reaction' and 'Kill Your Stereotypes' are two of the best songs i've heard by any American band and this standard is continued right through the album ending in another classic 'Gag'. Flawless.

Macclesfield based Kreosote have had a constant stream of split ups and line-up changes since they formed in late 1995 but if their new 8 track CD is anything to go on they might have finally arrived. 'Dirty Pint' is an excellent blend of punk and hardcore that I certainly liked. I can't really compare this CD to earlier material because this is the first offering i've heard by them but on this CD the band do have a distinct sound which always helps a band get their own identity in a world saturated with very similar sounding bands. 'Ratatat' the first track got my attention straight away with it's raw guitar and aggressive vocals and this onslaught continues through the entire CD with 'Muppets & Fuckwits' and 'Arrogant Wankers In Suits' being my personal favourites. Warning: Listening to this CD on headphones could result in your head exploding.

I recently saw Coprolite play their first gig and I was very impressed with their mix of ska, punk and hardcore. They were flogging an 11 track CD 'Taking Down Tyrants' for just a quid and I thought you can't go wrong with that, how wrong I was. I am a fan of DIY but the production on this CD is sadly lacking and it might actually do the band more harm than good. It is as if the band felt they had to get a CD out to sell as soon as possible and they should have taken time to produce something that would have done them justice. The CD has some good songs on it but the production or lack of it is always there spoiling the sound of a good band. The talent is there and I haven't seen many debut gigs as good as Coprolite and i'm sure this band will succeed in the not too distant future.

I'd not heard that much by Tiger Army who hail from Los Angeles and 'Music from Regions Beyond' is the first complete album i've heard by them. The CD is a mixture of psychobilly, punk and rock, very varied and very entertaining. This is a band who don't fit into any mould because it'd have to be a big mould to accomodate all the different styles they play. Always melodic the tracks go from the slower 'As The Cold Rain Falls' to the breakneck speed of 'Afterworld' (My favourite) and on to the unmistakeable psychobilly sound of 'Hechizo De Amor'. The vocals are very distinctive and work very well with every style covered on this excellent 11 track CD. I'll certainly be on the hunt for more material by them. The production is also very good and this should be a big hit for Tiger Army.
