CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

'Hardcore Seanography' is the first material I have heard by Ipswich based Singled Out. Another band who have that distinctive American sound which is becoming so prevalent in British youth today. However I do worry because British music and TV is becoming so swamped with Americana that Britain is rapidly becoming America's 51st state. Singled Out's music itself stands up compared to other bands of the same ilk but I find there is more depth to British bands who don't follow the American path. On a positive note the 12 tracks on the CD show this band have talent which shows through even without great production. They also have the ability to slip out of their US mold to play a couple of good ska tracks 'Immature Ska Party' and 'Gangster Rap'. On the whole not a bad effort with 'Big Band Problems' being the best track.

Edinburgh band Down To Kill essentially play punk tunes with hardcore vocals but there the similarity with most bands I know ends. I saw Down to kill live a few times earlier this year but at that time they performed with only male vocals. I liked what I heard then but when I heard the difference the alternating male and female vocals added to this CD I was impressed. Their music is powerful and filled with aggression from both male and female vocalists which makes this band different to all British bands i've heard recently. This six track demo EP CD has definite anarchistic leanings with 'There's No Justice' and 'Rise Up' being good examples. In all honesty considering this is just a demo I was surprised at the excellent quality and If you can get hold a copy it's well worth a listen.

Another band I saw live recently on the same bill as Down To Kill are The Threats who are also based in Edinburgh. 'God Is Not With Us Today' is their new 14 track album and it is quite different to earlier material I have by the band. This time there is a definite sway towards a style played by rock bands in the same mold as Motorhead and this is displayed more than ever in 'Life Fast.. Die By Mistake!!'. I do think bands have to progress musically or they just end up stagnating. These guys aren't ever gonna do that but I myself prefer the hard edged punk of their earlier albums to this rock influenced album. There are too many flambouyant guitar solos for me but the punk sound does still filter through on some tracks and this is still a very good album.

I don't get many reggae offerings but 'Come Fi Di Youth' by London's The King Blues was a pleasant change to the CDs i'm generally sent to review. This is just a single comprising single and album versions of the same song but what a good song it is. I like traditional Reggae and it left me wanting to hear more so I visited the band's myspace site and it's obvious to me that this band has talent. The band have plenty of gigs lined up and I think if they stick to traditional reggae more than the commercial stuff they could build up quite a following. Reggae definitely has a place in music today and hopefully these guys can help it to win popularity with today's youth.
