CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

I have heard hundreds of CDs by hundreds of bands since Punk4life started and South Yorkshire's Most Likely To Fail have rapidly rose to be one of my favourites. There are 8 tracks on this CD and it just doesn't get much better than this. 'Vicious Circle' kicks the CD off and gives you a taste of the quality that just oozes from this CD. 'Innocent Eyes' is lyrically superb and 'Killing Time' and 'Weekend Rebel' are both excellent songs. The title track 'On the Outside Looking In' is my favourite at the moment but I could make a case out for every song on this CD because it's all so good. The entire CD is filled with good guitar riffs and the two guitars add a melodic quality which added to great vocals and lyrics add up to this excellent CD being more considered than in your face.

I saw Global Parasite live earlier this year and I thought they were pretty good which is also my summation of 'Feed Us War' their 5 track live EP. The EP is DIY pure and simple but even without the expertise of a producer to enhance the sound it's still a good listen. I did find it very hard to stamp a genre on these guys, hardcore with plenty of fuzzed bass and guitars is how i'd describe it. From the first track to the last this EP is filled with rage which seems directed at anyone who has a pulse. With supersonic drumming combined with angry vocals coming at you from all directions and the afore mentioned fuzzed bass and guitars this band is treading a path that hasn't been walked by many bands in the past and that to me is refreshing. Fight/Resist was my favourite off a good CD.

The Lobotomies who are based in Belfast have released 'Drink, Pass Out, Repeat' a 7 track EP which belies the bands average age that is only about 18. This is another CD that is heavily influenced by the US scene but this seems to be a route that most young bands fortunately or unfortunately seem to going down these days. This is quite differerent to an earlier split CD by them and The Cunts 'No Guts No Glory' which had a more British feel to it. Essentially a blend of US style punk and hardcore this CD does show that the band are trying to push the boundaries of their music with 'Anger Management' and 'Don't Look Back' being good examples. Not a bad effort.

My mate OMD has quoted The Shadowcops as "The best live band in Manchester" at the moment and i've got to admit he's not far wrong with that analysis. They were one of the many bands that played the SAS 3 dayer earlier this month and they were excellent. 'Ready When You Are' is their new 5 track CD and it shows in just 5 tracks how talented this band is. These are songs that have been well constructed musically with the guitar being the dominant force. There are many influences here but it all adds up to a sound that has Shadowcops stamped all over it. These guys are guaranteed to get you bouncing up and down to their classy tunes unless you are a corpse. 'My, My, My Personal Ennui' was my favourite track but it only just eclipses 'Green Light'. Hopefully a full length CD is in the pipeline soon.
