CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

The Fanny Pads are another band who played a great set on the SAS tour earlier this month. 'Two Sides To Every Story' is as British sounding as it gets, which was a relief after all the US style punk i've been sent recently. This is rough and ready old school punk which I love. The production isn't the best but i'm not interested in polished pefection. Since when was punk supposed to be perfect? On the whole this is a pretty good effort but where the album starts off strongly with 'A Better Life' the strength of the material isn't maintained through the whole album. The last few tracks seem to have been added as an afterthought. Quality always beats quantity in my book. Of the 15 songs on the album there were two that were a cut above for me 'A Better Life' and 'Disillusioned'.

DBD (Death By Decibels) were another band to play on the SAS dayer earlier this month. I saw these guys live about 2 years ago but they have really progressed since then. With a definite slant towards the US their music isn't just the cloned US music you would expect. 'Nobody's Heroes' is a band playing right at the top of their game, a band who can challenge American bands on American soil. These guys should be setting the states blazing with their music. It's all about cracking the difficult to break into US market but I suspect it won't be long before these guys are regulars stateside. Crammed with great songs this is a superb album with 'Agnostic' and 'Come Alive' being 2 of the best songs i've heard this year and even they were topped by 'Submission' which is a classic.

Just the two tracks here but what a great couple. 'Killing Time' is a better recording of a track off Most Likely To Fail's 'On The Outside Looking In' CD. Whilst the album version was very good this version shows how much good production matters. There is thought gone into the lyrics and the vocal delivery is excellent, all backed by a great bunch of musicians. One of the best bands around they have a catchy style that is very infectious and i've definitely caught the bug. The second track is a cover of the Bad Religion song 'American Jesus' and as you probably know i'm not a fan of covers but I must admit I had to eat my own words after hearing this. Not just as good as Bad Religion's version but better, and better by a long chalk. This one song highlights what a great band Most Likely To Fail are.

First Time Riot are another band who prefer the British sound which so many of the young British bands neglect in favour of the US style punk that for me gives a band no identity. These guys from the Midlands were one of the best bands to play the SAS 3 dayer earlier this month. I really enjoyed them live and the same can be said about this four track demo EP. This is old school punk at it's best and it left me wanting more of the same. Raw guitar dominates their sound and the vocals are aggressive but tuneful. This is a great effort and 'To Follow Your Leader Is A Dangerous Game','T.C.B.' and 'Seize The Day' are all great songs but in 'This Country' they have a song that wouldn't look out of place on any punk rock compilation. Hopefully they can get in the studio soon and record a full length album.
