I
hadn't really heard much by Gallows and this one single
which has two versions of 'In The Belly Of A Shark'
(Clean & dirty edits) isn't really enough to
form an opinion on a band so I started looking for more
material by them. The band have been touring in America
as part of the Warped Tour and this English hardcore outfit
have been very well received there. With shows in Australia,
New Zealand, Japan and several European cities ending
with a UK tour it's obvious they are trying to push their
popularity on a global rather than just a local scale.
As far as this single goes I thought it was a good song
and as hardcore bands go these guys are more tuneful than
your average hardcore band. The quality of other material
i've since heard by them is excellent and a big future
for Gallows is a definite possibility.

'The
Kill' by Los Angeles alternative rock band 30 Seconds
To Mars is the first i've heard by them. This is yet another
single by an established band that has just two versions
of the same song. In the days of vinyl you always had
a different song on the B side but major record labels
are so miserly these days you never get anything free.
The single itself is a melodic rock anthem first released
in 2006 and since the band's popularity has increased
since then, they are hoping with this re-release to beat
their previous best UK chart position of 64. With two
sold out runs in the UK behind them that should be easy.
I have since found out that the video of this single (which
re-enacts scenes from the film The Shining) won the MTV2
Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

This
three tracker 'Unleash The Cock' by Barnyard
Masterbator is the first CD i've got by them even though
i've seen them several times live, the last time being
the SAS 3 dayer where they put in a very good performance.
The first track of the three 'Plastic Surgery Nightmare'
which I thought was the best track off the three
kicks the CD off nicely with raw sound and good female
vocals from Scarlet. It progresses to 'Scum Between
My Toes' which is rough and ready punk but this time
the song is mixed up with an occasional change to a ska
beat. 'Useless Flesh' starts with fuzzed guitar
and continues to a fast and furious onslaught of rage
that ends in a finale of assorted animal noises. Not a
bad effort and definitely a band to see live.

Another
band who played on the SAS dayer are Blackburn punks Ambush
UK, one of the youngest bands on the scene at the moment.
I saw them a live couple of years ago and they have made
steady progress. 'Reclaim The Streets' is their
new eleven track CD on the newly formed Humdrum Punk label.
Most of the material I get sent by young bands these days
seems intent on producing songs that will appeal more
to the American market but there is more of a British
feel to this CD. With many influences ranging from old
school, hardcore and even a bit of American the band even
squeeze in an Irish ditty complete with flute. The title
track is in my opinion the best although in my opinion
after hearing the whole CD there's still room for improvement.
