CD/DVD/Vinyl Reviews

This various artists complitation is a collaboration between Fungal Punk and the newly formed Slit Records. It features two tracks each from four bands, each representing a different country. First band up are England's Gimpfist a band who are right at the top of my list of bands to see live. 'Brotherhood' their first track is a good old school singalong with some nice guitar riffs but their second track 'More War Stories' has distinct similarites with reggae tracks by The Clash such as The Guns Of Brixton. I must say that I thought this song actually surpassed The Clashes reggae offerings for quality and this band also have The Clashes ability to diversify which is always the hallmark of any good band. One of the best songs I have heard in the last year.
Next up are Welsh trio Stuntface. I wasn't sure about this lot when they first went from a foursome to a trio but now it seems like they have managed to retain their great sound. 'Every Dog Has Its Day' and 'Go To Hell Blues' are both fast, furious and catchy songs that bridge the gap between punk and hardcore. Two great songs from one of the best bands to come out of Wales.
Belgium's Koncept are the next band to display their talents. I'd not heard much by Koncept but after hearing 'World Today' and 'Belspelletjes' two fast paced, aggressively sung songs i'll be on the hunt for more by them.
Finally come 'Norah Louise Kuzmah' and 'Wake Up Call' two tracks by Scotland's The Red Eyes. I'd put both these songs in the pop punk bracket, they're more melodic and tuneful than raw and aggressive but as with most pop punk tunes they're very catchy. At only £2 for this well produced CD this is a snip from two guys who are motivated by music and not money.

'My Bones' is a 14 track by Raw Novembre consisting of 8 tracks from the bands distant past and 6 new and unreleased songs. This CD is my first taste of Raw Novembre and although there is no doubting they are talented musicians I thought there were too many influences crammed onto one CD which resulted in a real mixed bag of songs. Having said that it could be just that some of the songs on the CD are from the bands past when their sound might have been evolving. Influences range through punk, metal and gothic right through to indie which for me gives the band no real musical identity in a world that pigeon-holes bands by genre. Not really my cup of tea this but I did like 'Time Bomb' and if that is a foretaste of what is to come from Raw Novembre they might make an impact.

Kent based Los Salvadores are another band i'd never even heard of and 'Attack Of The Clones' their new 11 track CD has a mix of punk/Irish/folk music that is very catchy and certainly went down well with me. The CD really has a real live feel to it and the unusual mix of punk guitar blended with folky banjo gives this band a sound all their own. If you are a fan of Blood Or Whiskey you will certainly like this offering and i'm pretty sure Los Salvadores will be packing them in any time they play live in the Emerald Isle. Being a fan of Irish music myself I think this CD is as good as anything by more established bands plying their trade in the same genre. I haven't stopped playing this CD since I got it and if it was on vinyl the grooves would have worn away to nothing.

Yet another CD from my most regular contributors Destructors 666. These guys are so busy in the studio i'm surprised they have any time to play gigs. Maybe that's why i've never seen them live. Still they keep coming up with quality songs time and again and 'Sachen Lassen Mit Fremden Machten' their latest 7 track CD is as good as anything the band have released previously. Not afraid to experiment with their sound these guys main influences are punk, metal and rock 'n' roll and it all gels together nicely. 'Ray Gunns' was my personal favourite off a CD dominated by references to all things alien but on the whole I must admit it was quality right through which is rapidly becoming the norm for Destructors 666. I must also give a mention to the bands artwork which is always top notch.
