Guest review by Justin Openshaw

Well....i've managed to get my greasy hands on a copy of the new (ha) Sex Pistols dvd called 'There'll Always Be An England', which is basically the Saturday night gig recorded at Brixton Academy from last Novembers shows in London. For all you anal retentives out there, the actual date is 10th Nov 2007. Theres probably a million bootlegs floating around from this gig already, as I managed to get a copy of the Thursday show barely a week after the gig. I went to the Friday night show where I managed to lose my mobile phone down the front. It was the first time i'd bothered to see the 'pistols. For me, all these gigs etc are 25 years too late and I can't really be arsed to get excited over a bunch of old fuckers playing the same 20 songs over and over again. Rotten has become a parody of his former self and comes across as like some English (yeah I know he's Irish) fool characterised by the smutty, bauldy 'Carry On' films from the 1970s. Anyone whos ever seen the recent 'pistols gigs or who watches this dvd, will realise that its basically 'The Johnny Rotten' show. Boy, has he got an ego to sink a ship. He is so full of shit as he minces around in front of the crowd, swinging his arms around and pulling faces like an embarrassing Uncle dancing at a Wedding. What a fucking old fool....but guess what the crowd love it. If he bent over and shat into the mosh pit , they'd be scooping it up and asking for more. The old git can do no wrong and doesn't he fuckin' know it !! However I find him quite tiresome and his tirades at the audience about being "shy" and "how much he loves England" is complete bollocks as he now lives in the USA along with Steve Jones. Quality wise, this dvd is top notch, cracking camera angles, loads of crowd shots, close ups, the works. The sound is awesome but what makes it for me is the extras. We get a unique guide to London by the 'pistols as Cook, Jones, and Matlock return to old haunts and tell tales of their upbringing and the formation and rise of the band. Steve Jones is exceptionally funny as Paul Cook nods along as his sidekick. Matlock is his usual boring self (I once upset him and he stormed off in a huff like the wanker he is). Of course, we also get Rotten, who tours London on an open top bus spouting complete drivel about the new architecture in the city and continually shouts "hello you poor people" to the passers by. He drones on and on and on and his whining voice and stupid comments start to grate after a while as John holds court and puts the world to rights, if only they hadn't have given him the microphone ! The film has been shot and produced by co- conspirator Julian Temple and is an interesting insight into the rise of the band and what they are about today. I find it hard to take it all seriously as i'm pretty sure they are taking the piss half the time, whilst at the same time knocking up a healthy retirement fund for ageing rockers. It all depends if you buy into the swindle, after all, this isn't 1977 anymore and no one gives a shit about the Queen anyway. I don't know about flogging a dead horse but I wouldn't mind flogging a certain Mr Rotten.
